June 1 - Final Post

Video Update 6/1/20

Hey All,

Thanks for a great year. I hope I have the chance to see you again next year. Have a great summer, and if you have an incomplete currently please do the following:

  1. If you have an incomplete and you are in the 50% range - Set up a phone call with me, do work, turn it in, and email me telling me what to do. Work is due by Thursday June 4th!
  2. If you have an incomplete and you are BELOW the 50% range - Know that in the fall you will have a final exam when we return in the fall. If you score a 60% or higher on the test you can earn a passing grade.
I will email out an email to all parents and students with a link to this post.

Regards and Have a Great Summer,

Hey Everyone,

This is our last week with an assignment. You have all been doing really well. Keep it up and take care!
  1. Missing Assignments: Make sure you are emailing me when you submit an assignment late to Google Classroom. I don't know when you have submitted something unless you email me.
  2. George W. Bush Activity: Please complete the activity about George Bush on Google Classroom. There are only 2 open ended questions to answer.
Thanks for everything. You guys have rocked during this really difficult time.

Video Update 5/18/20

Hey All,

Hope you guys are doing well. I have a headache and a scratchy throat. Hoping it is allergies... Anyway, here is what you should focus on this week.

  1. Clinton Activity: Complete the assignment about President Clinton. Please do not copy and paste as this will give you a zero on the assignment.
  2. Missing Assignments: If you need to complete missing assignments, make sure you email me with an itemized list of what was submitted. Please pass the class this semester!!!
  3. Wednesday Check In: Due to low turnout we will be cancelling this weeks meeting. If you have questions for me, you know what to do.
Later,

Mr. T

May 11 - Ronald Reagan Activity

Video Update 5/11/20

Hello Again,

I am excited for another easy week in terms of content and assignments. We will use Wednesday as a day to ask content and logistical questions, and at week's end your assignment for the week will be due.

Here is what you should be focused on:
  1. Incomplete Students (and those in fear of an Incomplete): Please work with me. This is a time to have 100% pass rate. I have emailed many of you personally, texted through Remind, contacted your friends, and reached out to your families. Make up assignments, and start doing work on our current tasks. We only have a few weeks left.
  2. Finals: Last week, during our Google Meet, I mentioned only giving a final exam to those with an Incomplete. Unless I hear something different from admin, this is what we will be doing in our class. If you have earned a Pass based on your performance from the semester, that will be your grade.
  3. Ronald Reagan Activity: This is a short activity that should not take you more than 3 hours (more like 1 hour, tops). You will examine a successful campaign ad that Reagan used during his re-election campaign. Make sure to watch my review video of the assignment before starting. It is in the blog, below.
  4. Google Meet: We will have a Wednesday Google Meet time at noon. I will send out a Remind message with the agenda at that time.

Hey All,

You guys have been crushing it. Keep up the good work and try to finish strong. I know that we are all getting tired of this. Make sure to feed the soul by doing some stuff that you love. That is why I have been fishing so much...

Things to do:

  1. Make up or Retake Test: Tomorrow, 5/5/20, we will have a retake time to do the test. I will post the code to Google Classroom at 8:00 AM and you will have about 12 hours to take it. There will be no more times to take the test besides tomorrow. (Login information is below)
  2. Modern American Politics Questions/Video: Please access the question sheet and video from Google Classroom. You will make a copy of the template and answer the questions on the Google Doc.
  3. Google Meet Check In: I do not have an agenda, but will be available for an all class Google Meet on Wednesday at Noon. We will start at noon sharp, so please be there promptly.

Hey Everyone,

I will be reaching out to students and families that are failing my class this week. Please help me, help you in passing the class. I need you to be in contact with me and completing missing work. For everyone else, we will have some unit review and a test on Friday! Here is what you should all be doing:

  1. Missing Assignments: As always, if there is a missing assignment that you are submitting late, email me with the assignment name and a call to action to grade it. If you have questions about other missing assignments email me with questions!
  2. Unit 6 Review Task: Please watch the attached screencastify video. You can fill out the graphic organizer and use it as a study guide for your test. Think of the test as a simple check in to see if you know what is going on. Worst case scenario you will retake it.

Hey All,

Hope that you have been well. This week will be a time to get to work. Yet, there is nothing all that new. Some of you have probably finished all of your work (well done btw). I would like you all to review the items below. You will start to see things entered into the gradebook this week.

  2. Complete the following assignments (due dates on Aeries and GC should be up to date:
    1. Edpuzzle Vietnam (found on Google Classroom)
    2. Research Workshop EC (found on Google Classroom)

Update 4/2/20

Hey All,

I have given up on counting our school closure days now (even though we are at about 14 days). Anyway, I hope that these blog posts are finding their way to you. Many teachers have been posting simple questions to see who is able to access the information being provided. I think I will do that as well. This will give me a sense of who is reading these and who is not.

Some things to note:
  1. Next week is Spring Break - try to relax and do not worry about school.
  2. Starting the 14th we are moving back to compulsory school work (meaning you have to do it). Please be patient with your teachers. We are all trying to figure out the best way to do this. Some will give too much work, some will give too little. We are all trying to find the balance.
  3. For our class, please see the updated due dates for our assignments:
    1. Research Workshop EC is due on April 14th and will be added to your Research Workshop score
    2. For the CH 22 Reading Notes and Edpuzzle Vietnam... these are due on Friday April 17th
    3. The CH 23 Reading Notes are due on April 24th
  4. Office Hours for Departments (see image below)
    1. This means that any Zoom or Google Meet style instruction will take place during M, W, or F from Noon-1PM
    2. For our class, I plan to use this for questions on assignments or clarification of concepts. We will most likely not do large group lecture!!!
  5. TO DO NOW!
    1. Please complete this Google Form. You need to login to your school Google account to complete it. https://forms.gle/YXwieBKNN2hQgjCT7
Big thanks to all of you that have been doing some form of school work doing this time. Also I am looking forward to hearing from all of you in the coming weeks. I hope to make this situation as easy, yet informative, as possible. The next update you will see from me will be on Monday the 13th.

Regards,

Mr. T

Video Update 3/27/20

Hey All,

I am over half way through the Research Workshop Project grading. Things are looking a bit weird (and by weird I mean not good). I want to make sure that everyone learns something from this, so I created an extra credit opportunity for you all to gain some redemption. Take a look at the following stuff you should be focused on for now:

  1. Unit Assignment Sheet Readings - Keep up on your readings. When we return (remotely or otherwise) these will be due.
  2. Edpuzzle - Vietnam - Many of you finish this... well done.
  3. Research Workshop Extra Credit - This is eligible to all. You MUST watch the video below to do the extra credit. Give me till tonight to finish grading the rest of 3rd and 6th period.
See you soon (I hope)

Mar 20 - Day 5 of School Closure

Video Update 3/20/20

Hey Everyone,

Thanks to those of you making the best of this situation and being diligent with your studies and academic growth. Some quick updates:

  1. I will be posting progress grades tonight. They WILL NOT include: Research Project, Edpuzzle Vietnam, or CH 22/23 Reading Notes. I will be grading the Research Project into the 4th quarter grades and the other assignments will be graded if/when we return from this quarantine. Thanks to everyone that got me missing/late assignments this last week!
  2. We can chat if you need to! If you are still trying to complete the Research Project, don't know how to do the Edpuzzle, or need some other support please email me you number and I can call you. I am using Google Voice, so the number will either say Restricted or No Caller ID.
  3. Stay strong! I will attempt to have a weekly update. With this new shelter in place order for the state there is a lot of mis-information. I have found the KQED website to be the most informative and accurate. Check it out! LINK

Mar 18 - School Closure

Video Update 3/18/20

Dang!

This isn't looking too good. Not sure when our school lives (or outside school lives) will return to normal. The governor is saying that we could be done with school for the rest of the year! That brings up many questions (grades for the semester, graduation, etc.). I want you to know, as of today, no one has answers. We are all in a "wait and see" phase of this thing. So before you bombard Mr. Perez with your questions, just give it a while. I would wait through Spring Break before you start to freak out too bad. Between now and then, more information should come out and the status of our country will have changed. For now... keep calm and carry on (like the British in WWII).

This is what I do know for the time-being in regards to our U.S. History class:

  1. Grades for the progress grade will be posted soon. I would focus on missing assignments for my class and others. Email me if you have questions. I need all of that work submitted by Thursday night (including the research project!)
  2. The homework on the assignment sheet is still a great thing to be doing. This week do CH 22 readings and next week do CH 23. If we get back the week after spring break, both reading will be due that Friday.
  3. The Edpuzzle video that was assigned Friday should be completed (through the Edpuzzle interface) by Thursday night. That is work from last Friday and needs to be completed. I will work with students that have tech issues.
  4. I will be in my classroom until noon today if you want to set up a phone call to chat about stuff. Please email me and we can schedule a call.
Even after this week, please feel free to email, use Remind, and stay up to date on what is going on. It is a changing situation and there are many different ways that this could go in the coming weeks.

Take Care,

Mr. T

Video Update - 3/17/20

Hey All,

Today is the second day of the school closure. Hope your families are well in this time of instability. I am hoping to keep work to a minimum during this time. There are many added stressors right now, and my class shouldn't be one of them.

For this week please focus on: completing missing assignments (when able / appropriate), CH 22 reading assignments, completing the Edpuzzle on the Vietnam War (answer the questions in the textboxes and use the Google Classroom Link).

Digital assignments through Google Classroom will be due at the time indicated through GC. Hard copy assignments (like notes), have a completion date but will be collected when we return.

I will continue to post daily with updates, clarifications, funny videos, and my general musings.

See you around,

Mr. T

Agenda (NO PPT)

Missing Work: Complete Missing Assignments (if possible)
Textbook Work: CH 22 (The Vietnam War)
EDpuzzle: Vietnam (Respond on Google Classroom)

Homework: NA (all of this is homework)

Mar 16 - School Closure

Hey All,

First, thanks to the majority of you that are on Remind. That will be a great interface to stay in touch with. It allows for one-on-one messaging and I can push out whole group notifications. Because the situation is continually evolving I am not sure that what we are planning now will be the case by the end of the week.

For those of you that try to do well in school, and are stressed, stay calm. For those that are using this time as an excuse to avoid work, don't. Check out the executive order from the governor here about high quality educational opportunities.

In terms of communication and checking in, you will be required to:
  1. Check the Blog daily
  2. Check your email daily
  3. Sign up for Remind (if possible... see below)
I will do my best to make this process easy for you. If you are checking the blog daily and communicating with me through email you will be fine. If you need to chat over the phone, that can be arranged as well.

Check tomorrow's post for more information and some content. FOR TODAY, all I expect is that you sign up for Remind and know the obligations for checking your email and the blog.

- Mr. T

Feb 10 - Intro Writing Workshop and Pleasantville (Day 1)

Hey All,

After spending 2 hours combing through missing assignments and late work, I came to the realization that a refresher course on essay writing strategies may be useful. This inspiration came from your peers that engaged in the alternative assignment to our A-Bomb debate.

Many of the essays did not start well (or end well for that matter), so I figured we would look into how to write a good introduction paragraph. If you would like extra credit on our Intro Writing Workshop just write "Live Long and Prosper" on the top of the first page in bold. Also please remind me about this agreement by referencing that you read this blog post. Thanks for the two of you that see this ; ).
